Twitter is still abuzz with talk of Elon Musk’s potential purchase of the platform, with Musk himself making it a point to weigh in by tweeting his own takes on how the deal would shape and enforce free speech online. There are several problems with that, according to Zeeshan Aleem, who writes that “the picture emerging from these tweets is that he hasn’t really thought through the complex dilemmas that he will have to tackle while overseeing the company.”
Aleem highlights some examples that expose Musk’s worryingly inadequate understanding of the basic principles of free speech, and how a global platform must navigate it. “All in all, Musk’s tweets dodge the fundamental riddles posed by Twitter and every other major social media platform,” he writes. In short, we should all be apprehensive, at the least, about what may come next.
