The Russian invasion exposes America’s capacity for self-delusion

From the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, mainstream American media has remained consistent in its narrative: Russia is the villain, bringing unspeakable violence and cruelty to a defenseless people. But to distance Russia’s actions so far from the U.S.’s leaves a gaping hole in modern history, Zeeshan Aleem points out.

Pointing out these inconsistencies and shining a light on America’s own history is imperative, Aleem says. “It’s about combating imperial blindness — American society’s endless capacity for self-delusion about how and why it conducts itself as a hegemon in the global arena.”
