Republicans didn’t hold back on the first day of Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing. Their insinuations ranged from suggesting Jackson is supported by a dark money campaign to attempting to resurrect “the ghost of the confirmation hearings of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.”
But one of the lowest provocations came from Sens. Josh Hawley and Marsha Blackburn, who charged that Jackson is soft on criminals charged with possession of child pornography, writes Jessica Levinson. “The fact that Hawley’s argument has been fact-checked and discredited doesn’t take all of the sting out of the attack,” she says. “The more people like Hawley who say ‘child pornography’ and ‘Judge Jackson’ in the same sentence, the more some people start to wonder, facts be damned.”

The world has gone through a once-in-a-century pandemic that disrupted nearly every aspect of our lives. We’re in the beginning of an energy transition unlike anything the industrialized world has ever attempted. And it can be very difficult amid war, plague, insurrection and climate disaster to conceive of what a flourishing future might even look like. From the future of energy to entertainment, Chris Hayes asks some of his biggest questions in his inaugural “Future of” miniseries.
On the third episode of the series, Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow talk to Chris about sustaining their 12-year friendship. Living on opposite coasts for years now, they had a head start on managing a long-distance friendship — a challenge many people shared over the course of the pandemic. Ann, a journalist, essayist and media entrepreneur and Aminatou, a writer, interviewer and cultural commentator, co-wrote “Big Friendship,” a book all about maintaining their close bond. They talk about the future of friendship and what it takes to stay connected for the long haul.
